The U.S. has been accused of a cyberattack directly before the country's current presidential campaign. Former president Nicolas Sarkozy is said to be behind the attack. There was a facebook page that his following was able to log into allowing the attackers to gain crucial evidence. The hackers would be able to view/use a given user's username and password. This is obviously an enormous security risk and a violation of privacy. Proper authorization should have been in place in order to verify user identity. Furthermore, proper documentation should have been in place in order to keep a record of fraudulent user activity. The U.S. has not admitted to being involved in this attack. The U.S. says it would be a foolish act on their part to destroy a strong and lengthy relationship with one of its closest allies. Users were then given fake emails to send them to a fake personal website. Further data was stolen from then on once users logged on to that site. A theory lingering is that the United States knew Sarkozy was on the way out and and the United States wanted to make "friends" with the new administration. This is the first time the United States has been accused of launching an attack on one of its allies. This story not only tarnishes the reputation of the U.S., but also the integrity of peace in general. Proper spam and virus protection should have alerted users of incorrect behavior. The facebook page was a lure acting as temptation for users to supposedly give honest opinions and feedback. The redirect was a direct attempt for hackers to gain private information through an unauthorized way.
